Private foundations are required by the IRS to distribute at least 5% of their asset value each year, which is a simplified statement of a complicated regulation and calculation called the Minimum Investment Return (MIR). For most of the past 20 years, The Clowes Fund could have met its MIR distribution solely by transferring ownership of its collection of European Old Masters since the year 2000 to the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. Nevertheless, the Fund has continued its cash grantmaking at MIR-level.
The Clowes Collection and our many grantees reflect the true value of The Clowes Fund beyond any tally of its assets.
